1968 CZ360 Twinport

April 26, 2021 By ndrake55

1968 CZ360 Twinport

This pristine example of a 1968 CZ Twinport. It has been completely restored. This is a later metal tank model. The motor has a brand new piston, rod, crankshaft , and transmission. The correct front hub also has the right “smooth”
backing plate (no ridge as found on later CZs). The rear hub is still riveted and both hubs retain their original finish.
Steel 18” and 21” wheels with Barum tires, 2.75 x 21 front and 4.00 x 18 rear. Other original pieces include solid
footpegs, metal front fender, metal number plates, gas petcocks, Jikov carburetor, and correct handlebars. The
airbox and rear fender are fiberglass. This bike with its brand new motor has never been started. This bike is part
of the Brian Grade Collection.

“Custom” 1973 CZ 250

The current owner raced CZ’s back in the day and spent a great deal of time, effort and energy restoring and customizing this bike. The photos speak for themselves.

Vitezslav Branda Collection

The following bikes are part of a large collection of CZ’s both production and “works” bikes belonging to Vitezslav Branda.  Vitezslav  is well know in the Czech Republic and production based, the second group are rare works bikes.

We hope to see more of Vitezslav’s collection in the future.
Thanks again Vitezslav!

1981 “Puki” CZ 380.  In an effort to keep pace with the Japanese manufacturers, Puki , a CZ dealer in Italy, began modifying production CZ’s to offer to his customers.  The only CZ parts used were the motors, which were tuned by Puki, the wheel hubs and chains.  Everything else was Italian made…….very rare.

1970 CZ 380    Type 981.  This bike is a special construction CZ raced by the owner of this collection in the European Championship of Veterans series.

“Works” Bikes

1975 works CZ 380.  This bike was raced by Russian GP rider Rybalchenko in the 1975 Motocross of Nations held in Sedlcany, Czech Republic.  Rybalchenko placed fourth and eight in the race.

983 works CZ 250    Type 978.  There were only about 10 to 20 of these bikes made and they were primarily for the National Team in Prague called “Dukla”

Kent Howerton

April 23, 2021 By ndrake55

Kent Howerton

Kent Howerton was one of the most versatile motocross racers of the 1970s and early 1980s. The Texan, nicknamed the “Rhinestone Cowboy,” won three AMA National Motocross Championships and two Trans-USA titles. He is best known for his time as a Suzuki factory racer, but he also rode for Husqvarna and Kawasaki during his 15-year professional racing career.

Howerton was born in Wichita, Kansas, on July 11, 1954. He was raised in the Denver area and first learned to ride motorcycles when he was 15 on friends’ bikes. At 16, Howerton got his first motorcycle, a 100cc Kawasaki Trail Boss, and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas, which would become his permanent home.

In all Howerton won 32 career AMA nationals and when he retired in the mid-1980s, he was second on the all-time AMA 250cc Motocross win list. In addition, Howerton was the 1980 AMA Pro Athlete of the Year; a two-time winner of the 250cc United States Grand Prix; a two-time member of the American Motocross des Nations team and twice winner of the ground breaking ABC Wide World of Sports Superbikers competition.

The majority of these photos are from Kent’s personal collection.

Thanks Kent!

Marty Tripes

April 23, 2021 By ndrake55

Marty Tripes

Marty Tripes was arguably the most talented rider of his generation. He started racing when he was 12 years old and by the time he was 13, he was winning local races on a regular basis.  In 1972, Marty, who was only 16 years old at the time, shocked the motocross Superbowl of Motocross in Los Angeles.  Motocross would never be the same!  The following year, Marty won the Superbowl again, this time aboard a factory Honda.  Marty is best know for his stand up riding style and ultra smooth technique.  Though Marty never won a championship, his influence and popularity on American Motocross is forever etched in MX history.  Many of the following photos are from Marty’s personal collection.

Ake Jonsson’s 1972 Maico’s

April 20, 2021 By ndrake55

Ake Jonsson’s 1972 Maico’s

Featured here are Ake Jonsson’s 1972 Trans AMA Maico and his 1972 GP Maico. Both bikes in Sweden.

Ake Jonsson began his career in Sweden riding for the Husqvarna Factory Team.  Back in those days, there were no Husqvarna dealers so riders sponsored by Husqvarna dealt directly Champion’s Bengt Aberg and Torsten Hallman. After finishing third in the 1968 500cc World Championship, Ake was hired by the Maico Factory Team.

1970 was a tough year for Ake and Maico.  Despite the seemingly constant mechanical problems, Ake managed to once again finish third in the 500cc World Championship.  Going into the final World Championship race in 1971, Ake had a slight lead over Suzuki’s Roger DeCoster.  While leading the race, Ake suffered mechanical issues with his Maico and ultimately lost the title to DeCoster. Ake went on to dominate in the 1972 Trans-AMA held in the United States, winning nine straight races and the title!

Ake moved to Team Yamaha in 1973.  Mechanical issues kept him from repeating his performance of 1972.  He retired from motocross a few years later.

Ake remains in Sweden today and recently retired from running his very successful Yamaha dealership.

This is Ake’s Trans-AMA bike.  The most notable difference between the two bikes is the gas tanks.  The larger tank was necessary for the Grand Prix races, 2 motos of 40 min and 2 laps. In the TRANS-AMA,  the race was 3 motos of 30 min.

Ake won nine (9) straight races in the 1972 Trans-AMA series aboard this very bike. A true piece of motocross history!
